Academics

Lower Division

Berkeley's Lower Division curriculum provides young learners with a strong academic foundation, coupled with enrichment opportunities, including Spanish, science, physical education, computer literacy, library, theatre, music, and art. Social-emotional learning skills such as cooperation, self-expression, respect, and empathy are embedded in our daily classroom curriculum so students develop positive relationships with peers and adults. Various community service projects allow our students to put these values into action.

The learning needs of early childhood students in grades Pre-K through 1 are different from those of elementary school. Therefore, our youngest students need a place to call their own, which is specifically tailored to their needs. The Seivold Center for Early Childhood Education sets the stage for a child’s lifelong love of learning. This amazing center for students provides an environment for early childhood learning that allows flexibility and emphasizes exploration, play, and collaboration.

All Lower Division students benefit from a Makerspace and multimedia computer lab containing 3D printers, green screen filming walls, and robotics that enhance our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum and result in inspiring innovations by our children.

Our Lower Division Discovery Groups for grades K through 5 provide a mixed-age, small group environment for children to learn more about themselves and Berkeley's Core Cultural Norms. Social responsibility is instilled in our students at an early age and service to others is very much a part of that expectation. As such, all Lower Division students participate in community service projects throughout the year.

Following the end of the school day, the Lower Division offers the Berkeley Educational Enrichment Program (BEEP) and a variety of popular after-school clubs and activities, ranging from golf to robotics to chess.
